About the Books

What is Seraph Hunter?

Seraph Hunter is an eight-book fantasy series by M.J. King. It begins in 1687 in Lincoln, England. Brenzel, a nineteen-year-old miller’s daughter, has been condemned to die. A stranger steps out of the light and offers her a choice instead of a rescue, and a hat. What follows crosses continents and centuries, and realms beyond our own: the trenches of the Great War, the lands of the Lakota, the courts of ancient Egypt. Beauty wants to destroy her. Traveler wants to save her. Brenzel must choose between good and evil, and whatever she chooses decides the fate of everyone.

Who is it for?

Adults, and readers aged 16 and over. The books are about people living through the worst moments of their lives, and they don’t look away from what that costs. Very little in them is gratuitous, but some of it is hard. Readers who love historical fantasy, mythic stories that cross worlds, and a love story told over a very long time will feel at home.

If you’ve enjoyed Frank Peretti, Frank Herbert or J.R.R. Tolkien, you’re in the right place. Seraph Hunter brings together Peretti’s unseen spiritual battles, the scale and seriousness of Herbert’s Dune, and the deep, ancient feel of Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

What kind of book is it? Is it Christian fiction?

It is fantasy, myth and history together, with a love story running through all of it. M.J. King calls it Real Fantasy. The idea is that what we can see and touch is only a small part of what is real, and imagination is a way of glimpsing the rest.

The series is written from a Christian faith. It draws on scripture and on the great stories of many cultures, but it echoes them rather than retelling them, and readers are free to reach their own conclusions. The series makes one promise: it all works out in the end.

Who is M.J. King?

M.J. King is the author of Seraph Hunter. King writes fantasy out of a conviction that reason alone sees only a slice of reality. Daring to imagine, through the Spirit, turns a life hemmed in by “what is” into one open to “what if?”. You can read more in Why I Write Fantasy, and contact the author for review copies, interviews and rights through the Contact page.

The Seraph Hunter Cosmos

The story moves between our own Earth and eight realms beyond it, each a world of its own. You can explore them on the Seraph Cosmos page. On the Book Series page you can talk with Baelen, Bard of Longrain, and in the Library of Rhema you can visit the Librarian, who keeps the record of all of it.

Reading with others

Brenzel never walks her road alone, and readers don’t have to either. You can start or join a Seraph Hunter coffee or tea club with friends, in your kitchen or your favourite corner booth.

If there’s something here I haven’t answered, come and ask me in the Library, dear. The tea is already poured. I won’t tell you how it ends, mind. You’d never forgive me. — Libby
